Vlissingen, Netherlands – Dutch hydrogen energy innovator HyER Power is set to make history by launching the country’s first large-scale hydrogen power plant capable of generating both electricity and heat. The groundbreaking facility, set for installation at Innovation Hub KAAP in Vlissingen, is expected to be operational by the end of the year.
As grid congestion continues to challenge businesses across the Zeeland province, the HyER Power Plant presents a decentralized, all-in-one energy solution designed to mitigate these issues. By integrating a heat pump, fuel cell system, and advanced energy storage technology, the plant will provide an efficient and sustainable alternative for electricity and heating needs.
Addressing Energy Challenges in Zeeland
Zeeland has faced increasing energy distribution constraints, making it difficult for businesses to secure reliable grid access. The bottleneck has stalled expansions and slowed the development of new industrial projects. HyER Power’s innovative solution could help alleviate this issue by offering a localized and independent power source.
“The HyER Power Plant will generate both electricity and heat from hydrogen for buildings,” said Erik van der Wal, co-founder of HyER Power. “This is a major step for Vlissingen, as it will become a showcase location for new energy solutions.”

One of the defining features of the project is its smart energy management software, which will optimize energy distribution and efficiency. The system is designed to integrate seamlessly into existing infrastructures, making it an attractive option for industries looking to transition to sustainable energy sources.
In addition to its direct impact on local energy needs, the project will serve as a test case for using hydrogen technology in the built environment. It will include comprehensive studies on current and projected energy consumption, as well as system design and installation planning.
Funding and Future Prospects
The initiative has received significant backing, including €332,874 ($363,080) in funding from the Zeeuwse Public Interests Foundation. This financial support underscores the growing interest in hydrogen as a key player in the renewable energy transition.
Beyond its immediate benefits in Zeeland, HyER Power’s pioneering work could set a precedent for similar projects across the Netherlands and beyond. As the global shift toward sustainable energy gains momentum, hydrogen-based solutions like this one could play a crucial role in decarbonizing industries and reducing reliance on traditional energy grids.
